to begin with, the mc is kinda a schizo, visiting a psychotherapist to deal with emotions after some accidents in the past. at the same time, he is a bit cynical smartass commenting on the bullshit of adults and dumb talks of his peers providing a social commentary aspect of the film. importantly, no straightforward "the special one" vibes around donnie, he is just a local lunatic.
although the scary rabbit-bunny (already want to sketch its skull) appears on the posters, it's not a real horror movie, but rather a dramatic mystery thriller with disturbing visuals. through the storyline, mc and viewers are solving a puzzling warning about the ending of the world. in terms of onscreen picture, not much action scenes, but many episodes involving kaleidoscopic visions and cgi.
finally, I checked the 2h-long director's cut, and by the end the whole film felt like an introduction to the last song and it's lyrics meaning
[spoilers]
some viewers considered the final somehow confusing, probably because there are no clear statements on wtf is happening in terms of time-traveling. tbh, the ambiguity of the plot is far from the most difficult to comprehend time-traveling film "primer" released several years later. from my pov, it was clear that mc intentionally died in the airplane crash that he had escaped the first time (at the very beginning), while all the other characters wake up recalling the whole movie plotline as a bad dream.

And I find it kind of funny
I find it kind of sad
The dreams in which I'm dying
Are the best I've ever had
