Una pura formalità, 1994

and another highly rated on imdb movie where polanski appears as an actor... in duet with gerard depardieu who i knew only by the credit agricole advertisements

the film is a criminal thriller by french-italian team that is set up in a small town police office. it looks like a castle, has a leaking roof and electricity problems in the storm.

a locally famous author onoff is under investigation after taking a walk in the storm with empty pockets, and without spoilers, the whole movie is a dialog between him and the chief inspector

#towatch A Pure Formality 1994

next goes a collection of all that i watched relateble to r. polanski (in chronological order):

Rosemary's Baby 1968 [R] - horror involving a satanic cult of neighbors hunting for a baby of the new residents. the fear of people living next door and paranoic attempts to understand esoteric knowledge included.

Chinatown 1974 [R] - it's a mysterious thriller with tricky plot twists, called a neo-noir mystery by wiki. this detective story gets pretty dark in details, yet i liked the badass

The Tenant 1976 [R] - probably one of the first psychological horror-thrillers, didn't get it completely, but it's a good one. includes cross-dressing and more shit of that kind presented as something creepy.

Bitter Moon 1992 - romantic thriller, pretty fucked-up couple meets mcs on a cruise liner and shares their perverted life story of a manic love

#towatch Roman Polanski's high-rated samples

going through the "legendary directors" list skipping too old b&w authors, after ridley scott and david finsher picks, finally, came across roman polanski works

he is generally into thrillers and dramas with a heavy-loaded plot. one of the works i checked not so long ago was on my roommate's advice since it was her fav of the horror genre. and 4 (actually 5) more i watched last week to get an impression of the author.

got 64k pdf scans from our archeologists this morning

external hdd goes brr br brr brr br brrr

was low budget and mostly sober since monday. after getting through "10g per week and 10 lines of code per day" times I spent this week doing my work duties (copying code from 3 guides to my own python script) and got first results. ofc with a pretty visualization to demonstrate on today's workshop

wtf is workshop I discovered only today during a 6h long session (with a pizza break) with cz archeologists on their territory. literally a tight conference room, and 30+ yo europeans around. two bearded archeology enjoyers in front...

arrived 15min earlier, vaped in the yard well watching yellow autumn leaves hanging on the tree and laying around. got inside and walked around the room to see what they have laying around. nice aquarelle picture with a collage of archeology finding drawings hanging on the wall. picked a colored printout of the last years research in cz, went through the headlines and pictures before the first familiar faces arrived.

my senior college sitting right besides me definitely noticed how fidgety I am (couldn't even secretly vape for 2-3h). hope he liked the 🦖 🦕 I drew in the same notebook where I sketched and noted the whole working process.

overall went good, and heard that they wouldn't make it without me, by the end. yet said that I shouldn't be so "hasty" (last-minute) sending the warning I have a lecture during the workshop. but said I just needed an excuse to skip it plus I was the earliest to come in any case.

after that spent uah from the extra account on 🌿 to finally chill on the weekend. pretending to work is going well enough to do some hws in the empty office on the weekend

firstly, the title may seem strange, one of its meanings is explained in the beginning - a knot in a known worldwide children game. another meaning is relieved later in the story - the rope pattern doesn't look either like a cradle or like a cat at all.

secondly, the main sci-fi element is an ice-nine substance invented for military guys sick of getting stuck in the swamps. won't spoil the details, yet it's a mass destruction weapon able to freeze any water in a matter of seconds.

moreover, the mc is a writer sent to the laboratory where a co-father of an atomic bomb has spent his last days, there he discovers the last horrifying creation of this brilliant mind. although he was reassured such horrors beyond human comprehension don't exist yet, he is having nightmares about ice-nine. tbh, this morning i also dreamed about riding some car wagons escaping from the rain that was about to fall and freeze everyone...

the made-up religion is another powerful aspect of the novel, below are some terms from it's dictionary on wiki so that you know what to expect:

karass – A group of people linked in a cosmically significant manner, even when superficial linkages are not evident.
duprass – a karass of only two people ( loving couple who work together for a great purpose), who almost always die within a week of each other.
granfalloon – a false karass; i.e., a group of people who imagine they have a connection that does not really exist.
wampeter – the central theme or purpose of a karass. Each karass has two wampeters at any given time, one waxing and one waning.
foma – harmless untruths.
kan-kan – An object or item that brings a person into their karass.
sinookas – The intertwining "tendrils" of peoples' lives.
stuppa – a fogbound child (i.e. an idiot)
duffle – the destiny of thousands of people placed on one "stuppa"
sin-wat – a person who wants all of somebody's love for themself.
Busy, busy, busy – words Bokononists whisper when they think about how complicated and unpredictable the machinery of life really is.
boko-maru – the supreme act of worship of the Bokononists, which is an intimate act consisting of prolonged physical contact between the naked soles of the feet of two persons.
zah-mah-ki-bo – Inevitable destiny.

it's definitely a memorable book and you have my recommendation to check it

finished reading a postmodern sci-fi novel

heard about the author in several podcasts, and his works were depicted as intellectual literature - funny and meaty in meaning. in fact, he introduced a whole religion inside this book, and covered its philosophy pretty well (more about that later), so there is a lot of ideas to ponder and debate.

in general, i liked reading it which took me only 3 nights, so i can say it's an interesting one indeed. the key point is humankind's stupidity and recklessness in terms of scientific and technological progress.

#toread Cat's Cradle 1963

to begin with, the mc is kinda a schizo, visiting a psychotherapist to deal with emotions after some accidents in the past. at the same time, he is a bit cynical smartass commenting on the bullshit of adults and dumb talks of his peers providing a social commentary aspect of the film. importantly, no straightforward "the special one" vibes around donnie, he is just a local lunatic.

although the scary rabbit-bunny (already want to sketch its skull) appears on the posters, it's not a real horror movie, but rather a dramatic mystery thriller with disturbing visuals. through the storyline, mc and viewers are solving a puzzling warning about the ending of the world. in terms of onscreen picture, not much action scenes, but many episodes involving kaleidoscopic visions and cgi.

finally, I checked the 2h-long director's cut, and by the end the whole film felt like an introduction to the last song and it's lyrics meaning

And I find it kind of funny
I find it kind of sad
The dreams in which I'm dying
Are the best I've ever had

[spoilers]

some viewers considered the final somehow confusing, probably because there are no clear statements on wtf is happening in terms of time-traveling. tbh, the ambiguity of the plot is far from the most difficult to comprehend time-traveling film "primer" released several years later. from my pov, it was clear that mc intentionally died in the airplane crash that he had escaped the first time (at the very beginning), while all the other characters wake up recalling the whole movie plotline as a bad dream.

#towatch Donnie Darko 2001

heard about this masterpiece as one of the best halloween movies

overall, it's a sci-fi thriller with a bit of psychedelic visuals. moreover, the whole plot is based on time-traveling with less science and more fiction involved. there is even a book describing its rules, or as they call it a philosophy, with esoteric in style and pretty mystical in meaning chapters.

worth mentioning that the dialogs get weird sometimes, so I laughed a few times during serious talks, especially in the case of teachers. besides that, it's a great cinematic piece.

the last of the overall alien series that I watched was the 2nd crossover movie

it's dark as hell, and in more than one sense. firstly, the onscreen picture has too intense shadows, so usually half of the scene is hidden, and even action episodes are hard to follow. secondly, there is a child death shown in the first 10 minutes and a very effective city-scale safety measure is demonstrated in the final 10 minutes.

what's more, the aliens being a super bioweapon are able to infect even a predator... producing predalien. it was flashed at the end of the 1st "avp" but it's so poorly shown in the grim darkness of a rainy night and wet sewers of the 2nd crossover

worse than the previous one, but still entertaining enough

#towatch Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem 2007

finally, there is a semi-stand-alone series about the epic confrontation of aliens and predators

the 1st "avp" takes place on earth, yet in a very isolated place where a team of top-tier specialists is gathered to explore strange heat signatures underground. first half of the movie is only a setup for the main fight, and i like a specific lore piece about it.

apparently, teenage predators have to earn their cool guns via initiation hunting on aliens... and people were constantly used as bio material for creating sacred prey. moreover, the alien queen shown in the "aliens" movie escapes from the predators' prison with an automated activator and accidentally plays role of the final boss.

it may not be the movie of all time, but it was made with passion and worth checking

*missed a post on 2-3 films when forwarding from saved messages*

next goes a rich on lore 2nd movie. the whole mother theme was depicted pretty, good - finally shown the full reproduction cycle of the aliens, and mc lovely takes care of the child [the only survivor on the faraway moon base where a ship with aliens' creators crashed a long time ago]

the 3rd movie is a strange one, mc is trapped in a colony of religious murders and rapists. no weapons and a steel plant with giant cisterna of boiling metal. good one but skippable.

#toeatch Aliens 1986

the 6th movie continues on the previous one and the deranged android story

it's meaty in terms of lore exposition since the android studies his "children" very meticulously. he attracts people by playing old songs on the radio and waits to get his hands on the live human for his hobby. in any case, the whole "crsazy robot" thing was well depicted in dialogues between the normal and defective android.

#towatch Alien Covenant 2017

and the last one, this year release

the whole pace of the movie is tiktok inspired because the montage is much faster than in all previous movies. besides that, it's a great continuation of the alien series.

#toeatch Alien Romulus 2024

the next one is hardly about aliens, their creators get more attention from the exploration mission in search of life sources. that's when the suggestion about a mass destruction weapon base they found was spoken.

there is also a plotline with a bit defective android who plays on the side of aliens... yeah he has no meat in him to worry about being deep-throat fucked, so he is very excited about creating new life by himself as he sees this biological weapon causing the exact thing (except it's producing dangerous af organisms)
