Former Finnish President Sauli Niinistö commented that Donald Trump’s election as U.S. president is unlikely to have an immediate impact on military aid to Ukraine. Niinistö, speaking to Yle, emphasized that assuming Trump will simply “hand over” Ukraine to Russia is a misconception, despite Trump’s statements about a “quick end to the war.”
Niinistö noted that if there is a concrete peace plan, it has yet to be publicly revealed, describing current ideas as based on a singular proposal. He explained that Trump is applying pressure on both Russia and Ukraine. Trump has previously stated that the U.S. would provide Ukraine with extensive support if Russia did not agree to peace but expects Ukraine to show some flexibility regarding a peace settlement.
