Russian Strikes on Ukrainian Energy Raise Nuclear Accident Risk — Bloomberg

Massive Russian strikes on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure have heightened the risk of a nuclear disaster, US and European diplomats warned during an emergency IAEA meeting in Vienna.

“The risk of a catastrophic incident is real and growing, but the Kremlin is ignoring nuclear safety issues,” stated US Ambassador to the IAEA Laura Holgate.

Following attacks in November, Ukraine reduced output at nine reactors across its nuclear power plants. Stable power supply is critical for maintaining nuclear safety systems; its disruption could lead to fuel overheating and radiation release, posing serious threats to the region.

❗️Ukrainian Football Association Appeals to FIFA and UEFA Over Map Error

“The version of the cartographic depiction of Ukraine is absolutely unacceptable and appears inconsistent with FIFA and UEFA’s positions, particularly amidst the ongoing destructive war of aggression unleashed by Russia against Ukraine in the heart of Europe in the 21st century.”

The UAF demanded an explanation and correction of the error, emphasizing the importance of accurately representing Ukraine’s internationally recognized borders.

Moldovan Parliament Declares State of Emergency in Energy Sector Amid Gas Supply Risks

The Moldovan Parliament has declared a state of emergency in the energy sector due to the looming threat of gas supply disruptions from Russia. NewsMaker reports that gas supplies to Moldova may cease entirely on January 1, 2025, when the current gas transit agreement between Ukraine and Russia expires. Kyiv has already stated it does not intend to extend the contract.

The state of emergency will take effect on December 16 and is expected to last for 60 days.

Although Moldova has a valid gas contract with Gazprom until 2026 and an alternative delivery route via the Trans-Balkan gas pipeline, the December 16 deadline is crucial for reserving capacity on the pipeline. Moldova also faces a debt of $709 million to Gazprom.

The Dutch Supreme Court has dismissed Russia's appeal against Naftogaz of Ukraine, upholding the decision of the arbitration tribunal of the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague. This ruling reinforces the legality and validity of the partial award in favor of Naftogaz.

The dispute centers around Russia's illegal seizure of Naftogaz assets in Crimea following the annexation of the peninsula in 2014. The arbitration tribunal had previously ruled that Russia must compensate Naftogaz for the losses incurred due to this seizure.

Roman Chumak, Acting Chairman of the Board of Naftogaz, welcomed the decision, stating, “The Supreme Court's decision strengthens the position of Naftogaz Group in enforcement proceedings to recover Russia's debt for the illegal seizure of assets in Crimea... Naftogaz is on the path to restoring justice.”

This ruling marks a significant step in Naftogaz’s efforts to enforce the compensation and hold Russia accountable for its actions in Crimea.

Germany Suspects Russia in Baltic Cable Damage — Spiegel

German investigators suspect deliberate actions behind the damage to a communication cable between Germany and Finland, Spiegel reports.

Using the underwater drone SeaCat, investigators found “deep grooves on the seabed leading to the cable,” suggesting intentional interference. The damage is believed to have been caused by the Chinese vessel Yi Peng 3, which allegedly dragged its anchor along the seabed in the area.

The vessel remains off Denmark’s coast, but China has refused requests from German and Danish authorities to board the ship and question the crew. While Russia is suspected of involvement, the exact role remains unclear.
