series about c r a c k

great show about 80s la, when niggers discovered the method of freebase cocaine - growing crystals from a heated soda-water solution - and what it has led to in the neighborhood.

been watching linguistics iceberg explained and at some point the narrator used a scene from this show to demonstrate the cockney rhyming slang. in other words, it's necessary to watch in original to enjoy the aesthetics.

overall, I liked how young startuper vibe of the mc meets with reality of criminal drug dealing

the book itself is great. the setting looks like a barter store in the middle of nowhere and nowhen, and its owner travels to different times and places to exchange some things with people possessing interesting items or qualities using a black hole

literally furry-friendly "doctor who" but in american style, and the plot is intriguing since the mc (human?) becomes an assistant of the shop owner (cat-man) and his nanny (snake-lady). the latter is fucked ofc and it's described in kinda horny way with all the details of snake lady's body...

bonkers it's the last work of both zelazny and bester, a decent duet made a funny and thrilling masterpiece indeed

#toread Psychoshop 1987

lets begin with the only paragraph from wiki about this book:

Psychoshop is a science fiction novel begun by Alfred Bester, who died in 1987, and finished by Roger Zelazny. It was published posthumously in 1998 ..., following Zelazny's death in 1995.

both zelazny ("creatures of light and darkness", "night in lonesome october") and bester ("tiger! tiger!") works are familiar to me. plus, it's one of the long enough novel in betsers's bibliography. also tried his "man with no face" but i could't follow his strange style of narrative when falling asleep and listening to audiobooks

not many good ones left to cover, since i skip b&w ones

The Ghost Writer 2009 - a guy works for a shady political figure as a ghost of his autobiography writing, and in the process, we discover that cia is involved in that shady business as well - worth watching for the final plot twist

Oliver Twist 2005 - an adaptation of the classic novel about poverty set in london, that i haven't checked yet, but the story was interesting enough to follow despite being clearly kids oriented

Death and the Maiden 1994 - similar in some ways to "the ghost writer", yet different in many ways, mc is a female that has undergone some shit involving a past political regime terror and, questionably, the stranger living next door

#towatch Roman Polanski's watchable samples

yeah, works of that polish-french-american fascinated me for a while

Venus in Fur 2013 - one night of a theater audition involving a dominatrix femme fatale and a play director, only post factum discovered that "masochism" term was named after the author of the source book this movie is based on

Carnage 2011 - the last i checked, german comedy about two families trying to handle their kids' fight, and eventually getting involved in their own pretty funny fight

An Officer and a Spy 2019 - political intrigues around dreyfus, probably a gem for history fans, but generally a watchable historical drama

#towatch Roman Polanski's ok-rated samples

meanwhile, i am continuing to watch polanski's works

The Pianist 2002 - apparently a mainstream film about a jewish pianist in warsaw, who survived by a chain of coincidence, and not without a help of an admiring nazi listener. pretty cool depiction of the ruined city center the mc sees after crawling out of his shelter by the end of the nazi occupation and right before the soviets' arrival

The Fearless Vampire Killers 1967 - one of the coolest vampire movies, british comedy by genre, a story of the rick&morty'ish duet dealing with a cool-looking (covered in snow) gothic castle inhabitants

The Ninth Gate 1999 - mystical thriller about witches, cults, and devil. depp as mc, boobs, and the whole plot around old book(s) engravings are the best in this a bit silly masterpiece

#towatch Roman Polanski's well-rated samples

and the last one i checked was more kids-oriented

this one is noticeable for its lore depiction since the series starts in a semi-utopian society apparently hidden from the outside world, a group of kids find some ancient spaceship and accidentally launches it... long story short, there are only skeletons left from the last crew, and their droid who brings kids to their home by a vague request - which turns out to be a pirate bay station

the story goes around those kids trying to get back home, while a shady force user accompanies them to get to the legendary planet of treasures

in summary, i was pleased by the kids interactions with the droid, and the world-building details

another series for grownups is about rebels stealing from the empire

wiki says it's a prequel to "rogue one" which is 3,5th movie, and maybe my fav of all. this show has similar vibes - a small group of randoms each skillful in something specific masters a plan on how to fuck up the empire's order.

in the best traditions of bank robbery films, there is an old guy - mastemind of the whole operation - who acts from back and deals with political intrigues around the finances for his revolution

on the whole, great political thriller and criminal action in the star wars setting

#towatch Andor 2022

next one is much better, also about one of the mandalorian warriors, who actually overthrows jabba the hutt power in one of the tatooine territories

he is kinda a decent criminal overlord who rules with respect rather than fear, and importantly, he dares to kill his enemies when it's needed. much like the previous mc, this one likes to care about pets, and gets himself a giant frog monster put in the basement below the visitors' table... pretty badass.

there is a whole side plotline about mc in a single pajama becoming a respectable member of the desert tribe that look like fremen from "the dune" and even deals with syndicates bunching spice from the local mines.

finally, the baby yoda, grogu, and his bodyguard take part in the territory defense when the little one shows off force tricks and the metal guy gets a superfast spaceship - maybe their best depiction in general

#towatch The Book of Boba Fett 2022

below are several watchable star wars universe series, lets go in release order

firstly, there is "the mandalorian" with baby yoda that i intentionally haven't reviewed although watched some seasons as an ongoing.

in short, cute baby yoda, who doesn't get some cool scenes until the end, and his bodyguard friend go on adventures taking bounty hunting quests.

the best aspect of the show is the various planet settings and characters that actually broaden the movies' universe. overall, not very memorable and gets boring in action scenes sometimes.

the last two books are less exciting due to the complete character cast update and an overall focus shift from wormless dune to the planets populated during the great scattering caused by the emperor's death.

firstly, in the 5th book, a memorable character is a female natural with worms, who can kinda speak to them and stay safe near those monsters. she catches a ride to the emperor's spice stash on one of the worms, which gives us great scenes depicting ruins of the fremens capital.

secondly, there is a memeful dark parody of the secret sisterhood - they are also forcefully bred and skillful in battle females but more violent and can control men via sex - called whores among mcs from the original sisterhood in conflict with them...

sadly, the storyline of post atreides era ends with the death of the author and a cliffhanger

#toread Heretics of Dune 1984, Chapterhouse: Dune 1985

at the beginning of the 4th book, most of the characters from the previous parts are dead - yet the godlike emperor lives for millenias, and his semi-loyal servant assassin duncan gets resurrected by genetic engineers as well.

hard to imagine his appearance, yet the emperor's body front segment still has arms and face left from his human look, plus legs turned to useless fins somewhere at the back segment - overall he moves by rolling and sliding (when not carried by his antigrav cart). not a human, but a demiGOD emperor indeed, considering his new lethal enemy - water - as he has been slowly turning into a conscious sandworm sitting on top of a giant stash of spice and controlling its galaxy-wide supply chains...

too bad that we get to hear the thoughts of such a magnificent being only from his notes that he intentionally allows to be stolen as an important historical corpus for people of that time.

#toread God Emperor of Dune 1981

as the previous part ends on a blind man walking away to the desert, while his semi-sane sister stays in charge and his newborn twins are yet to be raised, 3rd part is about these badass children fighting for their lives

plus, the setting has changed a bit too, since the planet's climate became more and more appealing after the water canals spread into wastelands from the cities that turned from caves into actual settlements of buildings and farms. but we get some hardcore survival and travels in the desert as well, some real adventures and dangers besides the political games.

finally, the transformation of leto junior into a god emperor begins by the end of this book, so i was excited to get more details about the life cycle of a sandworm. there is also an emphasis on biological systems in his political agenda - slowing down the ecological transformation of sand dunes into jungle valleys

#toread Children of Dune 1976

the 2nd book tells a story on how paul muad'dib makes sure the empire stays in the hands of atreides family, partly via fucking his fremen gf to produce offspring, and partly via scheming to make this offspring a legal successor with his political opponents - the secret sisterhood of well-trained eugenic fans, plus, genetic engineering enjoyers who produce clones, "face dancers" acting like liquid terminators, and artificial body parts like eyes for the whole inhabited galaxy.

in brief, it's a pretty decent continuation of the first book with a lot of familiar characters which is set on a still deserted and dry dune.

the author puts the messiah through failures and makes his obtained power position hard to stay on - yeah, "got"-like strategies and intrigues included

#toread Dune Messiah 1969

to begin with, there is a very old review of the first book

much later (last year) i started to get more ua lang recommendations on yt, and one of the authors interested me with long enough descriptive essays on various cultural topics, and in particular, his videos on the dune series. some of the descriptions sounded to me like he was making it up, so he inspired me to go through the rest 5 books written by the original author - frank herbert.

tbh couldn't believe the carefully retold storylines, and spoilers from those video essays didn't spoil the novels for me at all - only flamed up my interest to find out all the little descriptions of sandtrouts, god emperor, terraforming, and transhumanism enjoyers society...

watched one of last year's awards winning animation film

firstly, it's made in eu studios, secondly, there is no verbal communication and disney's talking animals, kinda arthousish. in fact, through the first minutes of the "wild robot" you expect such wordless dialogs using squicks and other natural to animals sounds, yet you get it in full only in this masterpiece.

briefly on the plot, it's kinda the great flood adaptation but without noah, although i doubt the bird's steersman skills... id guess the story is set in japan due to cat statues and depicted fauna, so there are several exotic species like capybara and lemur, plus fascinating landscapes.

final respects for a scene with a whale swimming through the city street - at that moment i got the shadow fish metaphors in the "angel's egg"

warm story in the great apocalyptic setting

big 🌿 idea💡

as soon as we have 100 subs, create an analog of an anon chat in tg - a separate channel with a max number of admins and others as subs [🪱 style] - which would make a great platform for free speech in ua/en languages and open discussions

ofc, shitposting🤡 on an adequate scale would be allowed

p. s.

back when I was working on the article and blogging about it, many people joined from big-boy tg channels' post forwards... having a field for getting in touch with such semi strangers seemed exciting and very appealing, who the hell are they, maybe some are even cooler than me....

finally coming close to a milestone of 100 subs, so have a reason to show off a bit 😏

creating anon chat of our subs?
