Russian Gazprom to Halt Gas Supplies to Moldova Starting January 1, 2025

Gazprom has announced that it will terminate natural gas deliveries to Moldova, citing the failure of Moldovagaz to meet payment obligations as a material breach of contract.

“Based on the provisions of the contract and Russian legislation, PJSC Gazprom is imposing restrictions on natural gas supplies to the Republic of Moldova,” the notice to Moldovagaz stated.

In October, Moldova’s then-Energy Minister Viktor Parlicov declared that the country would no longer rely on Russian gas. “We are already sourcing gas from alternative suppliers, at prices lower than the formula in the contract with Gazprom,” he said.

Meanwhile, Russian-occupied Transnistria will continue receiving Russian gas and is exploring ways to ensure its supply after the cessation of transit through Ukraine.
