Russian Strikes on Ukrainian Energy Raise Nuclear Accident Risk — Bloomberg
Massive Russian strikes on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure have heightened the risk of a nuclear disaster, US and European diplomats warned during an emergency IAEA meeting in Vienna.
“The risk of a catastrophic incident is real and growing, but the Kremlin is ignoring nuclear safety issues,” stated US Ambassador to the IAEA Laura Holgate.
Following attacks in November, Ukraine reduced output at nine reactors across its nuclear power plants. Stable power supply is critical for maintaining nuclear safety systems; its disruption could lead to fuel overheating and radiation release, posing serious threats to the region.
