European security services say Russia was behind the plot to send explosives on US-bound planes this summer, - WSJ

Russia is stepping up its sabotage campaign against Western countries – and another piece of evidence against them are the explosive devices that ignited at DHL logistics hubs in the UK and Germany in July. The official investigations traced back the attacks, concluding they were likely test runs for a larger plot to send explosives to the US and Canada.

What we know so far:

▪️Electric massagers implanted with a magnesium-based flammable substance were shipped via DHL to the UK from Lithuania. Lithuanian police apprehended a suspect, Alexander Suranovas, who is believed to be a proxy used by Russian spy services.

▪️The Polish authorities have also arrested 4 people, charging them with sabotage and participation in foreign terrorist operations. They are looking for at least 2 more suspects.

▪️The packages ignited on the ground by “a lucky coincidence,” according to German internal security chief Thomas Haldenwang. After conducting tests, German police concluded that once ignited, the devices would be very challenging to extinguish using standard firefighting systems on most planes, likely forcing an emergency landing. A plane over the Atlantic, en route to North America, could face catastrophic consequences, potentially going down in flames and resulting in mass casualties.

▪️Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov brushed off the accusations, calling them “traditional unsubstantiated insinuations from the media.”

These incidents add to the growing number of Russian operations across Europe, including arson in the U.K. and the Czech Republic, attacks on pipelines and data cables in the Baltic and tampering with water supplies in Sweden and Finland.

According to the statement, "Influence actors linked to Russia in particular are manufacturing videos and creating fake articles to undermine the legitimacy of the election, instill fear in voters regarding the election process, and suggest Americans are using violence against each other due to political preferences."

Iran is named as a "significant" threat.

There will probably be further "cleanses", similar to ones in the Russian defense ministry after Shoigu was fired.

It looks like Zolotov and Kadyrov are in a state of uncertainty. The arrests won't directly concern them. They are needed to keep them and "Kremlin elites" in the state of fear.
